“Autumn in New York
Why does it seem so inviting?
Autumn in New York
It spells the thrill of first-nighting” – Ella Fitzgerald

I’ll forever be #teamsummer, but there is something about autumn that inspires me to stop and appreciate my walks around the neighborhood more so than any other season, as the leaves crunch underneath my feet and the brisk chill in the air is a welcome one. Perhaps it’s also the seasonal memories I have every October when my kids ask to help rake our yard, then proceed to jump into the piles of rust, orange and yellow with unbridled joy. And of course, my third baby was born on the first day of fall, five years ago, so you could say, I certainly have a soft spot in my heart for autumn.

I’m always so moved by fall lyrics and how songwriters seem to have immortalized one of our briefest, most fleeting and most vibrant seasons of all. They often talk about endings and beginnings, ways of transitioning that we don't often think about in our day to day. Either way, I wanted to share some of my favorite song lyrics about autumn today – I hope it reminds you to look for Mother Nature’s brilliant beauty all around us right now.

1. “The falling leaves drift by my window
The autumn leaves of red and gold
I see your lips, the summer kisses
The sunburned hands I used to hold”
- Eric Clapton, Autumn Leaves

2. “It's autumn in New York
That brings the promise of new love
Autumn in New York
Is often mingled with pain”
- Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, Autumn in New York

3. “We're singing in the car, getting lost upstate
Autumn leaves falling down like pieces into place
And I can picture it after all these days”
- Taylor Swift, All Too Well

4. “Nothin' lasts forever
And we both know hearts can change
And it's hard to hold a candle
In the cold November rain”
- Guns N’ Roses, November Rain

5. “Float down
Like autumn leaves
And hush now
Close your eyes before the sleep
And you're miles away
And yesterday you were here with me”
- Ed Sheeran, Autumn Leaves

6. “October
And the trees are stripped bare
Of all they wear
What do I care?”
- U2, October

7. ‘“Cause it's too cold
For you here
And now, so let me hold
Both your hands in the holes of my sweater”
- The Neighborhood, Sweater Weather
