Star Wars Themed Kids Birthday Party

Confession: I’ve never seen a Star Wars movie but I sure can google how to throw a star wars party.

Actually, I’ve never seen any in the OG saga, none of the spin-offs, nor the newer TV shows on Disney Plus. True story. Before you come at me, Google tells me I would need 25 hours and 7 minutes to watch all 11 live-action Star Wars movies, which is basically an entire weekend binge — and what mom has time for that? Unpopular opinion perhaps, but I’d much rather be enjoying a trip stargazing at the planetarium than watching intergalactic droids fight on my screen.

While I am not eager to dive into Star Wars fandom, all three of my sons are more than happy to polish up their light sabers for battle as they somewhat recently discovered Star Wars during the first pandemic year. Almost every weekend, they gathered in the basement to watch another episode of The Mandalorian with their dad. Then they tell me about it during dinner, all three of them excitedly chatting over one another. It’s pretty cute listening to a 4-year-old say big words like Palpatine and Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi!

For someone who hasn’t watched a single Star Wars movie or anything in the Star Wars franchise, how’d I do planning this Star Wars themed kids birthday party for my 7-year-old son and his friends? I’d say I pulled it off. I’m thankful for Google so I could ask questions like “Are there orange light sabers?” and “Are Stormtroopers different from Clone Troopers?”, and Pinterest for providing all the DIY tutorials to make pool noodle light sabers and galaxy inspired cupcakes. And can we talk about these Stormtrooper marshmallow cupcake toppers? I made them myself using edible color markers!

A quick trip to my local 5 Below store and I found the perfect Star Wars goodies to give out: Star Wars comic books and oversized coloring pads that cost just $5 each. I also ordered Star Wars Stormtrooper novelty sunglasses for all the kids off Amazon, which I think would make a fun and useful summer accessory.

Do you have a kid who would love a Star Wars themed birthday party? Tell me in the comments what else you would add to a Star Wars themed party!
